Passion and Purpose: Living with Holy Zeal

Today's Scripture: 1 John 4:19

"We love because he first loved us."

Apathy is the enemy of the soul. When we lose our passion - for God, for life, for making a difference - we drift into mere existence rather than vibrant living. Jesus warned the Laodicean church about being "neither cold nor hot" and promised to "spit out" the lukewarm (Revelation 3:15-16). Strong words about the danger of spiritual indifference.

But passion cannot be manufactured. True zeal comes from encounter with God. When Isaiah saw the Lord "high and exalted," he was undone (Isaiah 6:1-8). When Moses met God at the burning bush, his life was forever changed. Passion flows from presence.

How can we rekindle passion that has cooled? First, return to our "first love." Jesus told the Ephesians that despite all their good works, they had "forsaken the love you had at first" (Revelation 2:4). Remembering why we fell in love with Jesus can reignite the flame.

Second, expose yourself to passionate believers. Passion is contagious. Find people who are on fire for God and spend time with them. Their zeal will help ignite yours.

Third, step out into uncomfortable obedience. Passion often returns when we act in faith, not before. Don't wait until you feel like serving, giving, or sharing - do it, and watch the passion follow.

Fourth, engage with world needs. It's hard to remain apathetic when confronted with suffering and injustice. Let your heart be broken by what breaks God's heart.

What are you passionate about? Does your passion align with God's purposes? He wants to set us ablaze with holy fire - not for our entertainment, but for His glory and others' good. Today, ask Him to rekindle the flame.
