Humility: The Foundation of Greatness

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE
Psalm 23:1-3
"The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul."

In a world obsessed with self-promotion, humility seems like weakness. We're taught to showcase our accomplishments, build our personal brands, and make sure everyone knows how great we are. But Jesus turned this upside down: "The greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted" (Matthew 23:11-12).

Jesus modeled perfect humility. Though equal with God, He "made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant" (Philippians 2:7). The King of the universe washed His disciples' feet. The Creator of all subjected Himself to His creatures' cruelty. This is humility beyond human comprehension.

But humility is not about thinking less of yourself; it's about thinking of yourself less. C.S. Lewis wisely noted that a truly humble person wouldn't be thinking about humility at all - they'd be too interested in others to focus on themselves.

Why is humility so important? Because pride blinds us to our need for God and others. It isolates us in self-sufficiency and prevents us from receiving grace. "God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble" (James 4:6). This isn't arbitrary; pride and God's grace simply cannot coexist.

Humility opens doors. It allows us to learn, to grow, to build genuine relationships, to receive correction, and to extend grace to others. Humility doesn't mean being a doormat; it means having the security in Christ to serve without needing recognition.

Where is pride creeping into your life? In comparison? In defensiveness? In the need to be right? Ask God to reveal areas of hidden pride and give you the grace to humble yourself. It's the pathway to true greatness.

Reflection & Application

Reflect on God's goodness in your life. Make a list of His blessings and spend time praising Him for His faithfulness.
