In an age of information overload, wisdom is in short supply. We have access to more knowledge than any generation in history, yet we often lack the discernment to know how to live well. The book of Proverbs calls wisdom "more precious than rubies" (Proverbs 3:15), and indeed, godly wisdom is a treasure beyond measure.
But what is wisdom, exactly? It's not just knowing facts; it's knowing how to apply truth to real-life situations. It's seeing life from God's perspective and making choices that honor Him and bless others. James describes godly wisdom as "pure, then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere" (James 3:17).
The good news is that wisdom is available to anyone who asks. James 1:5 promises, "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you." God doesn't hoard wisdom for an elite few; He freely offers it to all who seek it.
But seeking wisdom requires humility. "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" (Proverbs 9:10). This "fear" is not terror but reverence - recognizing that God is God and we are not. When we acknowledge our need for Him and submit to His authority, we position ourselves to receive His wisdom.
Wisdom also grows through experience and community. Proverbs frequently encourages us to learn from wise mentors and heed correction. Are you surrounded by people who challenge you to grow? Do you have relationships where truth is spoken in love?
Today, ask God for wisdom in the decisions you face. Seek His Word for guidance. Listen to wise counsel. And trust that He will direct your steps.
